Shepherd Farm is proud of its Breeding Program which combines superior quality Hanoverian and Oldenburg mares with carefully chosen warmblood stallions to produce offspring that have excelled in the show ring and some later as elite broodmares. Many of Shepherd Farm’s Hanoverian mares are Elite or Elite eligible and all of our Oldenburg mares have attained Premium status.
History of Our Breeding Program. Shepherd Farm began its breeding program with the purchase of our foundation mare Treveri. This 1987 German-imported mare is by Trapper and out of States Premium Dresden. Treveri was a brilliant start to our breeding program with her classic German Hanoverian Trapper bloodlines. Treveri combines beautiful gaits and correct conformation with a truly fabulous mind. She is loving, sane, nurturing and a solid producer. By 2006, when we celebrated Treveri’s retirement from breeding with a party at the Farm, Treveri had put 11 healthy foals on the ground and had amassed a barn aisle full of supporters. Building on Treveri’s strengths, we have continued to add to our broodmare band by selecting mares based on their bloodlines, correctness, athleticism, and good minds. Our current broodmares are: Treveri (retired), Farethewel, Weltmarlina, Wramona Q, Dartmouth, and Always Katelyn.
When we select a stallion for breeding, we carefully consider both the qualities we seek to further enhance or refine in our mares and the discipline that we plan for our foal. We have bred foals for dressage, hunters, jumping and eventing. Over the years, we have chosen to breed our mares to Elite Hanoverian Stallions: Loerke, Weltbekannt, Royal Prince, Bugatti Hilltop, DaCaprio, Domiro, Welcome S, and Nocturno. Further, in 2003, Shepherd Farm entered into a partnership with Silverwood Farm where we purchased the right to breed to two Silverwood Farm warmblood stallions each year. In past years, we have chosen to breed to Silverwood’s Art Deco, Sempatico, and Hall of Fame with great results. In some years, we do not use both of our breedings and then we offer one Live Foal Guarantee Breeding for sale at a reduced price. Please watch our Sales Page for Breedings for Sale.
At Shepherd Farm, we foal out all our foals ourselves. We believe in imprinting our foals at birth. Because we only have three or four foals each spring, we are able to handle and train our foals daily. We work consistently with the babies, touching their legs and feet and training with haltering and loading. As a result of this work, our foals leave the Farm comfortable with being handled and with human leadership.
Recent Successes of our Offspring. 2009 and 2008 were phenomenal years for Treveri’s offspring by Loerke at Shepherd Farm. As you can see, Loerke clearly stamps his offspring and both Leeandra (2003 Hanoverian Elite Mare Candidate, pictured above facing right) and Larisa LS (2005 Hanoverian Elite Mare eligible, pictured above facing left) look exactly like Loerke. The “twins” picture was taken at the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Fall Inspection and Mare Performance Test in Waterford, Virginia where both mares received top scores of the day.
2009 Awards:
Leeandra was awarded Site Champion at the Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Fall Inspection and Mare Performance Test. Leeandra received scores in the 8s and 9s, and also received a rare and coveted “10” for “typiness and femininity.” The Site Judge commented that giving a score of 10 is “extremely rare but well deserved in this case.” Leeandra ranked 5th in the Nation as a Top AHS Inspection Mare for 2009.
Larisa LS scored in the top 5 mares in a class of 20 mares at the same 2009 Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Fall Inspection and Mare Performance Test. Larisa’s inspection scores make her Elite eligible. Larisa LS ranked 27th in the Nation as a Top AHS inspection mare for 2009.
Also in 2009, Dartmouth was awarded Premium Oldenburg Mare status at the 2009 Oldenburg Inspection Fall Tour at Silverwood Farm in Lovettsville, Virginia. Dartmouth achieved a score of 106 points which placed her among the top 10 scoring mares nationally.
2008 Awards:
In 2008, Larisa LS was named the Grand Champion at the Morven Park Breed Show in Leesburg, Virginia. She also had high scores and top placings at Devon in 2008.
