Broodmare Lease Program

Little Eve 2

Some years we decide not to breed all of our mares for ourselves and we offer some broodmares for lease.  Currently, our broodmares available for lease are Farethewel, Weltmarlina, Wramona Q, Dartmouth and Always Katelyn.  Our Lease Program allows a client to lease our broodmare for a flat Broodmare Lease Fee of $2,500.  During this lease term, our broodmare stays at Shepherd Farm and we coordinate all breeding activities and care.  For the $2,500 Breeding Lease Fee, the client is entitled to the following:

  • Shepherd Farm coordinates all breeding activity with our trusted repro vet Ridgeview Veterinary Practice.  Ridgeview has been breeding our mares for years and is very familiar with our mares’ breeding cycles, which makes for a more efficient and cost-effective breeding process.  Ridgeview breeds our mares with fresh cooled or frozen semen on-site at Shepherd Farm.   Dr. Will Engel of Ridgeview Veterinary Practice is pictured below preparing to breed Farethewel with frozen semen at our Farm.

  • Shepherd Farm foals out your foal at our Farm.  We have significant foaling experience and rely on several measures to ensure a safe and attended foaling.  We test all mares approaching parturition with the Foal Watch Kit to measure the mare’s milk production in order to predict foaling.  Our mares wear halter alarms and we have ready mares under a video camera.
  • Shepherd Farm pays all non-breeding related expenses for the broodmare.  For example, we pay for the mare’s farrier, dentist, and for all seasonal shots.
  • Shepherd Farm boards your foal for free until the foal is 3 months old.

Under the Broodmare Lease, the client is responsible for all breeding-related expenses: semen shipping fees, breeding shots, and all breeding-related vet visits for the mare and foal.

Please contact us to inquire about which mares are available for lease during this Breeding Season.

All of Shepherd Farm’s broodmares have been leased for the 2011 breeding season.  Please contact us in November or December 2011 about leasing our mares for the 2012 breeding season.
