Adopted

Over the years, The Grand Illusion Horse Rescue, Inc. has found loving homes for many horses – here are their stories.

The one Adoptee of particular significance to our Farm is Dulcenea.   This is because Dulcenea found Shepherd Farm for us.   Years ago, we agreed to take on a PMU filly before we had a farm of our own.  We selected Kathie Hamlin’s Bentwood Farm (now Shepherd Farm) as our boarding facility.  When the Hamlins had the opportunity to move to a large horse farm in Berryville, Virginia, Elmington Farm, we “bought the farm” and left Washington, DC for the good life in the country at Shepherd Farm.  Life has never been the same since.

Opie, POA colt Opie.  Opie was adopted out as a 4 month old weanling colt.   Opie is a blanketed pattern Pony of the Americas (POA).
Chance Chance.  Chance came to us as a 5 month old PMU colt.  He required a complicated gelding surgery which we provided for.  We trained Chance on the ground and started him lightly under saddle.  We adopted him out as a 2 year old.  Chance is a Mustang Quarter Horse cross.
Cinnamon Cinnamon.  Cinnamon came to us as a 4 month old PMU gelding.  We trained Cinnamon to lead and to load.  We adopted him out as a yearling.  Cinnamon is a Belgian Quarter Horse cross.
Dulcenea Dulcenea.  Dulcenea came to us as a 3 month old PMU filly. We trained Dulcie to lead, lunge and load and adopted her out as a 2 year old for the foxhunt.  Dulcie is a Thoroughbred Mustang cross.
Zoe Zoe.  We rescued Zoe from an auction where we found her with a broken halter, long hooves and a matted mane.  Zoe had been a PMU mare in Canada. We trained Zoe on the ground and adopted her out a few months later. Zoe is a black Percheron mare.
Hickory Hickory.  Hickory was born at the Rescue out of our permanent resident Oaka.  She travelled to the Rescue in foal from Canada.  Hickory was adopted out as a 3 month old weanling.  Hickory is a black full Percheron colt.

Dog Adoptions.

In addition to our horse adoptions, we serve as a foster family for the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue.  We have successfully fostered and adopted out 35 Shepherds.  If you think you would like to add a German Shepherd to your pack, please contact us – we guarantee that we know where to find the right Shepherd for you.
